How to Grow Citrus in Sacramento, CA

Citrus trees love the sun. Where else in the United States conjures clear sunny days other than California. Those in Sacramento have the advantage with the warmer, inland temperatures. A wind-free spot with warm, southern exposure is the best for citrus trees. The weather changes in Sacramento, with colder autumn and winter nights. Planting a citrus in a container allows for mobility from outdoors to inside. Once established, citrus trees are easy to grow when properly maintained.

  • One-year citrus tree
  • 6-9” pot
  • Soil mix, premixed with aerator such as vermiculite or wood shavings

      Start by purchasing a healthy seedling from a reputable nursery.

      Select the correct sized container, starting with a 6-to-9-inch pot for a one-year tree. For dwarf citrus trees, a smaller container will suffice. As the citrus tree grows, increase the size of the container.

      Make sure there are sufficient holes in the bottom of the container, as citrus trees require plenty of good drainage.

      Fill the bottom of the container with an inch of airy soil, such as that mixed with vermiculite, cedar or redwood shavings.

      Gently remove citrus tree from plastic starter pot, loosening soil around the roots to aerate.

      Place the citrus tree into the container and fill in with soil, covering the top of the roots. Do not cover the trunk.

      Press the soil around the root ball to provide stability.

      Place newly potted citrus in full sun.

      Give the soil a heavy watering until it flows from the bottom of the container whenever the soil feels dry, about once to twice a week.
