How Do You Get Rid of Trees With Hanging Moss?

Hanging moss on your trees can seem attractive until you discover that the moss has spread throughout your garden, property and neighborhood, slowing the growth of trees and even potentially killing the foliage. Moss can also provide a habitat for unsavory pests you do not want in your yard, such as snakes, bats and a wide assortment of insects. Getting rid of a tree that has hanging moss growing on it may be necessary in order to stop the moss from spreading.

Consult your local and state laws to determine if you are legally allowed to remove the tree from your property. Some types of trees are protected by law, and individuals who cut down these trees, even on their own property, may be fined or otherwise penalized for getting rid of them.

    • 2

Use a chainsaw to cut down the tree. Make sure to plan out which direction the tree will fall and remove any items that could be damaged when the tree comes down. If you are not comfortable cutting down the tree, contact a tree service for assistance.

Chop the tree into pieces small enough to be lifted and removed from your property. Rake up the remaining limbs, foliage and moss to be disposed of and deposit them in garbage bags to prevent the moss from spreading to other trees.

Remove the tree from your property by either hauling the pieces off to the landfill or burning them.
