How to Trim a Carrot Tree

Carrotwood tree, botanically known as Cupaniopsis anacardioides, refers to a tropical evergreen tree that is no longer welcomed in Florida due to its invasive nature. Although carrots don’t grow from this tree, it colloquial name is well-suited because the interior wood of this tree is a vivid orange shade. Typically, this tree reaches about 35 feet in height and its canopy spreads about 20 feet once its matured. This tree needs to be pruned when necessary because growth occurs year around.

Instructions

    • 1

Use pruning shears with long-blades to remove lower interior branches. Removing these branches will allow sufficient sunlight to reach other vegetation around the tree.

    • 2

Stand beneath the tree if possible and look up towards the canopy. The major branches should appear to be evenly spaced as they spread out from the truck. Remove branches that are too crowded.

    • 3

Trim branches that cross each other or that are growing towards the trunk instead of outward.

    • 4

Trim the branches from the canopy where it interferes with outdoor structures or other trees nearby. Trim the branches so the tree has a natural round appearance that is aesthetically pleasing.

    • 5

Trim away any weak, old or breaking branches from the tree. Use a pruning saw if the branch is any thicker than ½ inch in diameter.
