How to Revive a Wilted Palm Tree

A wilted palm tree may be the result of drought, freezing, nutrition deficiency or disease, so your first course of action will be to try to determine the source of the problem. You may wish to discuss the matter with an experienced palm tree grower so you can begin with the most suitable remedy right away. Failing that, try performing a series of troubleshooting tasks one after another until you find a cure to the wilting problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a trench around the base of the palm tree, taking care not to damage the roots with the shovel.

    • 2

Place a hose into the trench and turn it on very slowly so the water drips for several hours.

    • 3

Repeat slow-drip watering regularly if the palm tree is not getting sufficient water. Exact watering amount will vary depending on climate as well as the size of the tree and rainfall. As a general guide, water the palm tree about twice a month during the summer and about every six weeks during the cooler part of the year.

    • 4

Treat the palm tree with fungicide if the wilting was the result of freezing. Immediately apply a fungicide after you observe frost-induced wilting. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application.

    • 5

Spray the green leaves with a liquid palm fertilizer, as well.

    • 6

Apply a second fungicide treatment 10 days after the first application. Do not treat your palm with more than two fungicide applications.

    • 7

Fertilize the palm tree in the spring with a slow-release granular fertilizer to provide consistent, suitable nourishment. This is important because palm trees need a variety of nutrients to thrive, but the sandy soil they grow in means that nutrients tend to leach away quickly. Apply the palm fertilizer according to the directions on the package.
