How to Get Clementine Tangerine Seeds to Grow

Orange trees are large, sensitive citrus trees and grow best in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Clementine oranges, a variety of mandarin orange, fall into the tangerine category and demonstrate smaller tree size and slightly better cold hardiness than their larger cousins. Their fruits are small, sweet and loose-skinned. Like all citrus fruits, tangerines carry plant matter for new trees in their seeds. Plant the seeds to grow fruit-producing trees, but don't expect a quick harvest.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash several seeds to remove fruit matter, which may inhibit growth. Fold the seeds in a paper towel and place the towel in a plastic bag. Store the bag in a refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks to prepare the seeds for sprouting.

    • 2

Put the seeds in a cup or bowl of water. Remove the seeds that float, as these are dead, and soak the ones that sink for three to four hours to soften the husks.

    • 3

Fill 6-inch pots with drainage holes three-quarters full of loose, crumbly organic compost. Water the compost to moisten it, then push the seeds 1 inch into the soil. Give each seed its own pot for adequate space.

    • 4

Put the pots in warm, sunny sites and keep the top 2 inches of soil consistently moist. Expect germination in four to six weeks.
