How to Kill the Feeders on a Cut Down Oak Tree

After you remove an oak tree from a landscape, you may find that the tree roots continue to grow under the soil. When this occurs, you will notice new growth emerge from the stump or from the soil around the area where the tree once grew. Control this new growth by killing the feeders on a cut down oak tree. With vigilance, you can eradicate the new growth completely and restore your landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Mow the lawn regularly to sever feeders that emerge from the soil through the grass. By mowing them off continually, they eventually will give up and stop growing.

    • 2

Clip off feeders with the pruning shears when you notice them growing. By cutting them off with the pruning shears, they eventually will run out of growing energy and stop returning.

    • 3

Spray the broadleaf herbicide over the feeders carefully. Saturate the stem thoroughly to cover it with herbicide, but be careful to avoid spraying the herbicide on surrounding plants. Allow up to two weeks for the herbicide to eradicate the new growth. If you still see the feeders after this period elapses, apply another application of herbicide.
