How to Grow Yucca Root in Tennessee

Yucca is a family of perennial shrubs and trees. There are over 40 known yucca species in the United States, distributed along the southern border, from California to Florida. Yucca is most commonly used as a decorative plant, often adorning gardens and flower boutiques. However, several parts of the yucca are also edible, such as the fruits, seeds, flowers and roots. Growing a yucca seed in favorable conditions in Tennessee is quite easy, as these perennials require little attention and hardly any water.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak a yucca seed in a bowl of water overnight. This will help soften the seed for germination.

    • 2

Pour potting soil into a large peat pot. Leave enough room -- approximately 3 inches -- in the pot to accommodate a growing yucca plant.

    • 3

Dig a hole -- approximately one-half inch deep -- in the center of the peat pot. Place the yucca seed into the hole. Cover the seed with potting soil.

    • 4

Pour water into the peat pot, but not too much. The yucca plant requires well-drained soil to grow. Pour only enough water to fill 1 inch of the peat pot.

    • 5

Situate the peat pot in an area with direct sunlight. The most favorable temperature range for the yucca is between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Allow your yucca plant to germinate. Water the soil once a week and ensure the young plant gets plenty of sunlight. Once the yucca plant outgrows the peat pot, it can be moved outside.

    • 7

Dig a hole outside large enough to comfortably fit the entire peat pot.

    • 8

Test the soil surrounding the hole. Pour water into the hole until it is half-filled. Monitor the hole over the next four hours to ensure the water drains within that time. If the water does not drain from the hole within four hours, select another area.

    • 9

Remove the yucca plant from the peat pot. Place it inside the hole so that the perimeter of the base of the plant is even with the soil level. Ensure the plant is centered in the hole and straight.

    • 10

Fill the hole with soil. If the soil is still moist, no water is necessary.
