How to Make a Homemade House Air Filter

When you have central or forced-air cooling, the use of filters helps limit the amount of dust and allergens in your air and also gives you the added bonus of deodorizing scents. The downside to these filters is that they don't last that long in some environments, and their costs range from moderate to expensive depending on the sizes you need and other factors. A viable (and money-saving) option is to make your own homemade house air filter.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Carbon mesh roll
  • Cotton batting roll
  • Craft glue stick
  • Optional scent additions

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your current filter pad insert in one of the vents of your air conditioning system. A standard measurement for these forced air vents is 12 by 12 inches, but sizes vary. Cut two squares of carbon mesh from the roll matching this measurement.

    • 2

Cut a segment of cotton batting matching the size of the two squares of carbon mesh.

    • 3

Place one of the segments of mesh in front of you with the coarse side facing you. Layer the segment of cotton batting over the square of carbon.

    • 4

Squeeze a line of craft glue along all four edges of the structure. Layer the second segment of carbon mesh over the structure, enveloping the batting and creating a sort of pad. This is your filter. It shouldn't measure any thicker than 1/2 inch.
