How to Get Rid of Black Bugs on a Swedish Aspen Tree

If you've recently inspected your Swedish Aspen tree and you noticed what looks like little black bugs on the leaves, you have an infestation of "leaf-rollers." Leaf rollers are not really black bugs but black bits that look like tiny bugs. A closer inspection with a magnifying glass will reveal the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll one of the leaves. Leaf-rollers are caused by small green caterpillars. The caterpillar rolls up the leaf, chews it and causes the leaf to fall off the tree. The black bits constitute the refuse the caterpillar leaves on the tree.

Place a spade in the ground where the leaves have fallen and fluff the soil. This helps to reduce the number of caterpillars around the tree because you're disturbing the area where the caterpillars begin their life cycle.

Inspect the tree frequently. Once the caterpillars have rolled the leaves, there is no way to stop the process. You must kill the caterpillars before they begin eating the leaves and covering it will black bits.
