How to Remove a Yoshino Cherry Stump

The Yoshino cherry tree (Prunus x yedoensis), often called the Japanese flowering cherry tree, makes lovely pink flowers and exhibits an attractive branching pattern. Due to this tree's vulnerability to disease and attack, and its habit of pushing up sidewalks and foundations, the tree is often cut down to a stump. The stump must be killed to prevent sprouts from growing into a new tree. Remove a small stump by digging it up with a shovel. Removing a larger stump requires tougher tools and chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig around the tree’s roots with a shovel if the stump is small. The Yoshino cherry tree has shallow, extensive roots. Dig under the roots as much as possible. If the roots are too long, cut through them so you can pull up the stump. Pry up the stump with a shovel.

    • 2

Cut the trunk down as low as possible, using a chainsaw or axe if pulling it up with a shovel is not possible. Cut as close to the ground as possible.

    • 3

Spraying the bark and cambium layer with water aids in transporting herbicide.

    • 4

Apply glyphosate herbicide to the stump as directed by the manufacturer. This may involve spreading it with a paintbrush covering the bark’s entire outer layer. Apply the product to fresh cuts because the tree may develop a protective membrane after wounding.
