How to Prune Anubias Afzelii

Anubias afzellii is a fresh water aquatic plant native to West Africa, according to the U.S. Integrated Taxonomic Information System. It is imported and propagated for use in freshwater aquariums and ponds. The decorative value is significant because the leaves are a rich green and quite large, with an upright growth habit. The plant grows from a rooted rhizome that can be divided for propagation purposes. Known to be a slow-growing species, pruning needs for Anubias afzelli are minimal and limited to keeping the plant healthy and in scale with its surroundings.

Instructions

    • 1

Snip off any dead leaves or stems immediately when you see them to prevent the plant from decaying in the water. Sever the dead or damaged leaf or stem down at the base of the plant to prevent partial leaves or stems from marring the appearance of the plant.

    • 2

Trim the top of the plant that has grown taller than the waterline and may be blocking light by cutting just above a leaf joint on the stem, anywhere below the water line as desired.

    • 3

Thin overgrown plants to allow more light penetration, room for other plants or just better fish viewing by removing the unwanted leaves and stalks down to the crown of the plant just at or slightly below the planting gravel or other substrate.
