How to Make a Raised Planting Bed on Legs

Raised planting beds that are set on legs, rather than built on ground, can be an asset for disabled and wheelchair-bound gardeners, as well as growers who don’t have workable ground available. While standing raised beds can be expensive if purchased, you can make a raised planting bed on legs for much less in one to two days, using basic materials. Plan to set your created bed in a full-sun area on a patio or deck or next to a walkway, and fill it with soil before planting your favorite annuals and vegetables.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one of the 33-inch-long boards on the ground on its 4-inch width. Stand a second board on its 2-inch width and place it parallel against the other board to form a long L-shape. Secure the two boards with five nails spaced every six inches. Repeat this step three more times to form the four legs of the raised bed.

    • 2

Stand a 35-inch board on its long side. Position the narrower side of two leg pieces against the ends of the board with the legs standing upright. Secure the legs to the board with three evenly spaced 2-inch screws. Repeat this step with the other two legs and a 35-inch board.

    • 3

Position the two side units opposite one another 35 inches apart. Place the two remaining 35-inch boards between the units to form a square. Secure the legs to the two boards with screws to complete the box.

    • 4

Place a sheet of plywood between the legs and lower it until it rests directly over the edges of the sides of the box. Insert a nail every eight inches through the plywood and into the sides.

    • 5

Lay the three 37-inch boards across the plywood. Position two of the boards so they run between the legs, and position the third so it runs across the center of the plywood. Secure the boards to the frame with two screws at both ends of each board. Drill six evenly spaced holes into the plywood where the boards don’t cover it.

    • 6

Flip the unit over so it is upright and resting on the legs. Line the inside of the box bottom and sides with a sheet of landscaping plastic. Secure the plastic along the upper edges of the box sides by stapling every six inches. Push the end of the screwdriver through the plastic at each point where the drilled holes are located in the plywood to complete the project.
