Use a container that is long. You can use a glass meatloaf pan or an empty aquarium. Before doing anything with the container, you will need to place a thin layer of dirt -- 1 inch is good -- in the bottom.
Add warm water to the container. The water must fill the container to the brim if you are using a glass meatloaf pan; put in 3 to 4 inches of water if you are using an aquarium. After adding the water, the dirt will float around in the water. You should wait until the next day before seeding the water so that the dirt can settle on the bottom. If you use more water, the plant will need to use too much energy to reach the surface. Using 3 to 4 inches of water will produce strong blue lotus plants.
Use a knife or file to scratch the top or bottom of the seed to break the hard seed coating. Only scratch the shell until you see the inner core, which looks creamy. After the dirt has settled, the seeds are dropped into the water. Drop the seeds in one at a time so that they are spread out over the dirt. The seeds are heavy enough to drop to the bottom of the container.
Sprinkle a very thin layer of white sand over the seeds. This layer is just added to lightly cover the seeds to keep them in place and so you can see when the seeds sprout. Place the container in a window where the sun can keep the water warm. The blue lotus seeds will germinate in two to three days. You will see sprouts peeking through the white sand. As the sprouts get bigger, the flowers will appear.
