How to Grow Nannochloropsis Microalgae

Nannochloropsis microalgae is a species used by aquaculture hobbyists. Discs to produce the algae facilitate the growth of zooplankton such as artemia. The algae are also used in reef tanks to feed small-polyp stony corals. You can purchase Nannochloropsis microalgae disc cultures at various aquatic hobby stores, and with the proper technique, you can grow the microalgae. The disc can be stored in a refrigerator for up to three months.

Instructions

    • 1

Microwave or boil 1 liter of water for seven minutes. Then allow the water to come to room temperature. This procedure is the way to ensure sterile water for the growing process.

    • 2

Remove the cover or seal from one microalgae disc.

    • 3

Add a layer of the sterile water to the disc, using a medicine dropper. Then carefully place the disc in a room with moderate lighting for 24 hours. Cover the disc with a bowl, box or other such cover to protect it during those 24 hours. If the disc came with its own cover, use that to protect it for the 24 hours.

    • 4

Scrape off the Nannochloropsis microalgae with a clean cotton swab, and add them to a liter of room-temperature sterile water. The microalgae will look like a greenish mass on top of the disc. Below the cells, you will see a gelatin layer, which you should not add to the water in your aquarium.

    • 5

Add the microalgae and sterile water mixture directly to your aquarium in whatever amount required by the aquaculture you are growing. If you don’t need all of the microalgae, store them in a plastic bottle in a dark corner of your refrigerator for up to three months.
