How to Grow Lotus in a Fish Bowl

A lotus is an aquatic plant that is part of the Nelumbo family and that grows from a tuber. Lotus plants are a common sight in ponds and are available in various species. A bowl lotus is the dwarf version of the aquatic plant, and it blooms in a wide array of colors. Since the bowl lotus plant only reaches heights of about 1 to 3 feet, you can successfully grow it in a fish bowl indoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour distilled water into a clean, empty fish bowl until it is several inches below the rim. Place the bowl near a window and let sit until the water temperature reaches 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Place the lotus tuber in the fish bowl. The lotus tuber will float at the top of the water. Wait until the lotus tuber begins to develop leaves.

    • 3

Remove the lotus carefully from the fish bowl and place on a damp paper towel. Discard the water in the fish bowl.

    • 4

Add dirt to the empty fish bowl. Continuing adding dirt until it reaches about 4 inches from the rim of the bowl. Place the lotus tuber on the dirt and slowly add water until it reaches just below the rim of the bowl.

    • 5

Lay a small rock on the lotus tuber to keep it from floating to the top. You can remove this rock after the roots anchor into the dirt, which is typically after a few weeks.

    • 6

Grow the lotus in full sun out of direct sunlight. After six new leaves grow, place aquatic fertilizer pellets in the fish bowl. Add the pellets each season after new growth begins. Refrain from placing the pellets directly against the tuber.
