Directions for Small Crocheted Flowers

Crocheted flowers can be used for many purposes including to adorn bags, hats, scarves or incorporated into fiber jewelry. As with any art, patience and practice are necessary. Many people find handwork, such as crocheting to be a practical way to relieve stress. Crochet thread, rather than yarn will result in a smaller flower for your project, and can even work for jewelry. Knowledge of basic stitches is all that is needed to make a versatile crocheted flower.

Instructions

  1. Flower

    • 1

Make a slipknot in the end of the color chosen to use for the flowers. Loop the slip knot around the appropriate size hook. Make seven chain stitches with the thread and hook. Bring the hook around and push it through the first stitch made. Make a slipstitch into that stitch to form a loop with the stitches.

    • 2
The flower starts out round, then starts to look more and more like a flower.

Chain one, then slipstitch back into the first stick made. Chain five to form an arch, skip the second chain then slip stitch the end of the arch into the third stitch in the loop. Repeat this all the way around the loop to form a total of seven five-stitch arches. Insert a stitch marker in the first arch made.

    • 3
The flower should be starting to take shape.

Make a slipstitch in the first arch made. Make five half-double-crochet stitches in the arch. Repeat in all of the remaining arches. These half-double-crocheted stitches have formed the flower petals. Move the stitch marker up to the fist petal.

    • 4
Adding a second row gives the flower more depth.

Single crochet in the first stitch behind the first petal. Chain six, then single crochet in the second stitch behind the petal. Repeat this step all the way around the flower to create a second row of petals.

    • 5

Cast off the flower. Set the flower aside for later use.

    Leaf

    • 6

Tie a slipknot in the end of the crochet thread in the color chosen for the leaf. Place the slipknot over the crochet hook. Make 16 chain stitches after the slipknot.

    • 7

Pull the hook back around and single crochet in the second chain stitch from hook. Make a half double crochet stitch in the next two chain stitches. Single crochet into the next four stitches on the chain.

    • 8

Make three single crochet stitches in the last stitch of the chain to turn the direction of the hook. Repeat step 2 down the opposite side of the leaf. Cast of the thread and cut of and extra.

    • 9

Place the leaf under the flower in desired position. Once the leaf is in the desired position, sew the leaf to the flower. Use matching color thread and a needle.
