How to Plant Pink Lotus

Pink lotus flowers, also called Nelumbo nucifera or the sacred lotus, have the longest living seeds on record, remaining viable after 1,200 years. Hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 5 to 10, pink lotus grow in ponds up to 6 feet deep. The pink lotus flowers are dramatic and up to 4 to 8 inches across. Since they are aquatic plants, you need to plant lotus in a pond setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a container that is shallow and wide instead of tall and deep when planting lotus, according to the University of Florida. Fill a sandwich-sized plastic bag with sand and place it in the bottom of the container.

    • 2

Mix the garden soil with 1/4 cup 10-10-10 fertilizer for every gallon of soil used. Fill the container two-thirds full of the soil/fertilizer mixture.

    • 3

Dig a hole 2 inches deep and as wide as the root ball and place the lotus rhizome into the hole. Cover the hole with soil. Cover the soil with 2 inches of sand or gravel.

    • 4

Lower the lotus into the pond so it is in water 6 inches deep. Once the lotus plant grows, place it in water 18 inches deep.
