How to Plant Plants With Dirt in a Water Feature Filled With Rocks

Water features, even those lined with rocks on the bottom, can be home to aquatic plants. Most aquatic plants, like water lilies and lotus, are actually planted in pots with soil before they're placed in a water feature. As long as the bottom of the water feature is level, you can place the containers with plants in them inside without a problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Select containers that are wide and shallow rather than tall and narrow. Fill a bag with sand or gravel and place it in the bottom of the container.

    • 2

Fill the container two-thirds full of heavy clay soil. Lay the plant's rhizome in the corner of the container and fill the pot full of soil.

    • 3

Cover the soil with a 2- to 3-inch layer of gravel or sand to prevent the soil from floating out.

    • 4

Lower the container into a flat place in your water feature slowly. Move some of the rocks aside if needed. Allow the container to fill with water. Place the container in the water so that the container is covered by about 6 inches of water. The plant should stick out of the water unless it is an underwater plant and not a floating plant.
