How to Germinate Seeds in Water Crystals

Water crystals are dry polymer that is super absorbent and holds onto water for extended periods of time. Commonly seen in diapers and used in greenhouses and floral shops, theses crystals have many uses. Seeds will thrive in water crystals because they will constantly be in a moist environment. Growing plants in crystals has the added bonus of being able to see the roots of the plant grow. If you add soil to the mix, the plants will have nutrients but the roots won't be as visible.

Instructions

    • 1

Hydrate crystals by adding 1 cup of water for every teaspoon of dry crystals. The crystals will rapidly absorb the water. Drain excess water using a colander lined with cheesecloth if needed.

    • 2

Mix equal parts of potting soil and hydrated crystals and put them in a seed tray. All-purpose potting soil works well.

    • 3

Plant the seeds in the crystal-soil mix and cover with a clear, plastic cover. Set the tray in a location where it gets filter light and keep moist by misting it regularly. The water crystals will ensure the seeds stay moist so frequently watering won't be as necessary. Seeds will germinate in about 14 days, depending on the variety of seed used.
