How to Water Plants on a Deck

Decks are a place for a barbecue an outdoor table and chairs set, but potted plants really make the deck feel like a getaway, especially if you have a small backyard. Many plants grow well in contains, from flowers like petunias to herbs like basil. Container grown plants need more frequent watering than in-ground plants since they have less soil and the sides of the container absorb heat.

      Place all the potted plants on your deck on container plates with 1- to 2-inch raised sides. This keeps the water from leaking out of the container and ruining your wood.

      Check the soil in the potted plants to see if the plants need to be watered. If the soil is dry to the touch about 1 to 2 inches deep the plants need to be watered. Never allow the soil to dry out completely.

      Pour water into the top of the container plant right at the soil level. Keep pouring the water until some water leaks out of the bottom of the container.

      Check container-grown plants to see if they need watering two to three times on hot days and windy days.
