How to Grow Grass Letters

Whether you want an original welcome mat or simply want to teach your kids about plants, growing letters in grass offers an entertaining project. Grow the words "welcome friends" and set them on your porch as part of a garden, or help your child grow his name to add a personal touch to a school project. Grass letters can also mark the entrance to a garden space or grace a windowsill with inspirational messages.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a seed flat with rich potting soil.

    • 2

Arrange letter cookie cutters on the flat in the message you'd like to grow. The message should be short; use personal shorthand or abbreviations for longer messages. For instance, if you want to grow a Bible verse, spell out the reference rather than the verse.

    • 3

Place the letters at least one-half inch apart so they don't grow together and look muddled. Sprinkle a single layer of grass seeds into each cookie cutter. Reach down into the cutters and press the seeds into the soil.

    • 4

Gently lift the cookie cutters up from the soil, revealing the message in the form of seeds. Cover the seeds with one-fourth inch of soil and water until the soil is moist all the way through. Place the flat in warm, sunny windowsill.

    • 5

Water the flat every other day with about 2 cups of water. In about a week, grass should start to sprout. Wheat and rye grasses grow very quickly. Monitor the letters and trim away any grass that grows outside the lines.

    • 6

Gently place pieces of green moss between the letters when the grass reaches about 3 inches long. This discourages grass from spreading and covers the soil, giving the message a finished appearance.
