How to Make Double-Node Bamboo Cuttings

A bamboo stalk is known as a culm and the rings along the length of the culm are called nodes. The spaces between nodes are called internodes. According to a study reported on the website of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, double-node bamboo cuttings root more readily and have more abundant and longer root systems than single-node cuttings. Propagation using cuttings taken in winter is more successful than that which uses cuttings taken at other times of the year.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose culms that are less than 1 year old. They should be 15 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, and they should contain at least two internodes and be taken from the bottom to the middle of the culm. Discard the top one-third of the culm. Remove all leaves.

    • 2

Pour rooting hormone into a shallow tray and place the bottom end of the culm in it. Allow it to soak for 20 hours.

    • 3

Pour equal parts of silt and coarse sand into a nursery flat. Water it until the water drains from the bottom of the flat.

    • 4

Dig a trench deep enough to bury the culm---placed horizontally---4 inches deep. Lay the culm in the trench and cover it with soil.

    • 5

Place the flat in an area that receives filtered sunlight and in which the temperature ranges from 50 to 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Water the soil daily. The bamboo culm should sprout within one month.
