The Chinese garden chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), also called Chinese windmill palm, is a cold hardy variety capable of surviving winters as far north as U.S. Department of Agriculture zone 7b. It grows up to 20 feet tall under ideal conditions and has stiff, fan-shaped fronds. This palm does well in almost any well-drained soil, but can't tolerate wet conditions. It grows in full sun to part shade, but performs best if lightly shaded.

Instructions

1
Dig a hole for planting that is deep and wide enough to easily accommodate the root ball and allow the tree to be planted at its previous depth.
-
2
Place the roots into the hole and cover them well with soil. Pat the surface of the soil down to remove air pockets.
-
-
3
Water deeply after planting. Continue to water each week to encourage faster growth.
-
4
Spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch beneath the palm in late winter or early fall.
-
5
Feed with slow-release palm fertilizer, as directed on package.
-
6
Prune away dead fronds at any time.
