How to Plant Near a Natural Pond

Natural ponds occur all over the United States. If you have a natural pond on your property you can use it as a feature in your landscaping by planting around and near it. Choosing plants that grow naturally near ponds will give them a greater chance of surviving in the moist soil. Many types of plants, from trees to flowers, grow well near ponds.

      Select plants that grow near ponds naturally, like weeping willow, St. John's wart and irises. Be sure the location near the pond has enough light for the plants you want to grow. Full sun is best for trees and most flowering plants.

      Dig a hole near the pond as deep as the plant's root ball and two times as wide.

      Place the plants into the holes and fill the holes with soil. No supplemental water should be needed while the pond if full. If the pond's water level drops during hot spells water the plants once a week for 10 minutes.
