Select containers that can fit at least three to six plants. Each container should be between 8 and 14 inches wide. Make sure each container has at least four to six drainage holes at the bottom. Select between three and six plants to fill your container. Smaller containers need fewer plants and larger containers need more.
Choose the plants first based on their growing habits. Flower Fields suggests using a mixture of plants with the following habits in each container: mounded, upright and trailing.
Select plants based on color next. The theme for each container should be either soft or vibrant. Soft colors include pastels like white, violet and pale pinks and blues. Vibrant colors are red, yellow, dark purple and orange.
Select plants for each container that grow in similar conditions, such as moist soil or drought tolerant.
Place the upright growing plant in the center of the container with the trailing and mounded plants surrounding it. Fill the containers with potting soil and plant the flowers in each container.
