How to Prune Dwarf Black Olive Bonsais

Dwarf black olive bonsai trees are miniature versions of the black olive tree, also known as Bucida spinosa. This tree is native to Florida and the Caribbean and isn't a true olive tree. Instead, it's an evergreen that's related to the buttonwood and mangrove. The black seed capsules look like olives, hence the name. The dwarf black olive makes a good bonsai tree because of its natural windswept look. Like all bonsai, some slight pruning is needed to keep it shaped and healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut back dead, damaged or diseased growth to ¼ to ½ inch past healthy grown on the bonsai. Make the cuts with clean, sharp scissors.

    • 2

Watch for new growth to emerge. When it appears, have a plan for the shape and size you'll want the bonsai to take before proceeding with further pruning. Allow the new growth to reach the size necessary for your desired shape and size.

    • 3

Pinch back the new growth when it emerges to the desired shape and size, using your fingers. Pinch the growth back by ¼ to ½ inch. Cut back no more than 60 percent of any new growth.
