How to Mulch for Truffles

Growing truffles is a difficult and long process. A seeded truffle orchard takes about five years to produce enough truffles for harvest. It will not reach full production until it is eight years old. Until that time, the roots of the trees and the soil around them must remain as close to optimal truffle-growing conditions as possible. A layer of mulch in the orchard bed helps to stabilize the soil's moisture and temperature to keep conditions in the orchard ideal.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull or spray any weeds growing in the orchard. Mulch suppresses weed growth, but it will not stop any weeds that are already established.

    • 2

Spread a 2- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch over the orchard bed. Fine particle mulch, such as shredded bark or pine straw mulch, provides adequate coverage with a 2-inch layer. Larger mulch, such as bark nuggets or wood chips, may be applied in a 4-inch layer.

    • 3

Scoop the mulch 1 to 2 inches away from direct contact with the trunk of the tree to prevent bark decay.

    • 4

Replace the mulch as it decays to maintain a 2- to 4-inch layer at all times.
