How to Care for a Ming Tree Bonsai

A Ming tree, or Ming aralia shrub, is an easy-care plant choice for bonsai enthusiasts. The Ming tree will tolerate a wide variety of light and humidity conditions and its fine, pinnate leaves and branches take well to training and trimming. Be aware, however, that the Ming tree has a sap that can cause skin irritation in some individuals, so always handle and prune wearing gloves or wash your hands thoroughly afterward.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Ming tree bonsai in a humidity tray to help it retain water. Ming trees shouldn't be overwatered, but do like to stay moist.

    • 2

Feed the Ming tree bonsai weekly with plant food that is diluted to half strength with water.

    • 3

Test the Ming tree's soil pH. They flourish in pH levels between 6.5 and 7.5. Increase or decrease the soil pH as necessary.

    • 4

Pinch back new growth to prevent branching, if it isn't in your desired design.

    • 5

Prune and groom Ming tree bonsai foliage frequently. Branches grow upwards and can become bushy without trimming, and trimming is the best way to train the soft, fleshy branches.
