Canna Plant Varieties

These exotic-looking plants provide big, bold color and tropical-looking foliage to borders and containers. Although most cannas grow between 3 and 5 feet tall, some varieties may reach 8 to 10 feet. Its flowers may pink, coral, yellow, orange or red. The foliage ranges from a solid lush, deep green to deep purplish-black. Cannas enjoy hot weather, full sun and moist soil.
  1. Canna "Australia"

    • Canna "Australia" is an ideal candidate for a specimen planting. This plant has the darkest leaves of any canna. The foliage is a deep maroon that appears nearly black. Large, scarlet flowers contrast with the waxy leaves. This variety gets up to 7 feet tall and loves the summer heat.

    Canna "Pink Sunburst"

    • Canna "Pink Sunburst" lives up to its name. Although it's only 3 feet tall, it makes up for its small stature with colorful foliage. The broad leaves are variegated with shades of yellow, coral, pink, purple and green. The flowers are a soft pink. It is excellent in smaller gardens and containers.

    Canna "Bengal Tiger"

    • Canna "Bengal Tiger" is a variety introduced from India in 1963. It grows to 5 to 6 feet tall. Intense, bright-orange flowers crown the plant. Many people especially like the variegated foliage with its display of yellow and green stripes.

    Canna "Cleopatra"

    • C. "Cleopatra" has yellow flowers with red spots.

      Another variety notable for its variegated foliage is Canna "Cleopatra." It has dark-green leaves festooned with reddish-bronze markings. The flowers are mainly yellow with red spots. This is a smaller variety that grows 3 to 4 feet tall.

    Canna "Stuttgart"

    • This 7-foot tall plant has long, slender leaves that are variegated with white and green. Its flowers are pale and apricot-colored. This plant appreciates moist soil and some light shade, both of which keep the leaves from scalding.

    Canna "Crimson Beauty"

    • Canna "Crimson Beauty" grows 3 to 4 feet tall, making it a good choice for the back of a border. Its leaves are a vibrant, solid green and its rose-red flowers attract hummingbirds. Removing spent flowers promotes blooming.

    Canna Glauca "Panache"

    • This canna is grown for its flowers rather than its foliage. The salmon-pink flowers bloom all summer long. "Panache" is an elegant, understated canna. The foliage is grayish-green, narrow and pointed. The plant grows about 6 feet tall and has a tidy appearance, as old flowers are shed instead of remaining on the plant.
