How to Harvest Honey at Home

Wild bees' nests are found in many locations such as hollowed out trees and abandoned nooks and crannies. When this happens in your own yard you may be inclined to harvest some of the honey from the nest for your own purposes. This can be done with some care. When harvesting honey, always wait for a warm, dry day in early spring. This will affect the honey and life of the bees as little as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear heavy clothes that cover all of your skin to avoid bee stings. Tuck your pant legs into your socks or boots and your shirt sleeves into your gloves. Wear a bee mask.

    • 2

Fill a bee smoker with newspaper and twigs and light it on fire. Pump the smoker to keep the smoke coming out and slowly approach the bees' nest.

    • 3

Blow smoke around the nest to cause the bees to become more tranquil.

    • 4

Reach inside and grab one of the outer honeycombs. Use a serrated knife to cut the comb free if necessary. Only grab the outer combs since the inner ones are still being used by the bees.

    • 5

Put the honeycomb in a zip-lock bag and slowly back away from the beehive.

    • 6

Cut the cap off the honeycombs and let the honey flow into a jar or other container.

    • 7

Allow the honey to sit for two to three days before sealing it or further processing it. This allows the bubbles to escape.
