How to Fertilize Your Water for a Lily Pond

Water lilies are divided into both pink and white flowered varieties with the blooms appearing in the spring and early summer. Water lilies will grow and propagate with little effort on the part of the pond owner. However, if you want the plants to bloom, you must follow a regular schedule of fertilizing the pond. When the pond is fertilized throughout the growing season, blooming is often extended until the fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a package of aquatic fertilizer tablets and insert one into the end of a fertilizer rod.

    • 2

Walk out to where the water lilies are located in the pond, using hip waders if needed.

    • 3

Push the end of the fertilizer rod into the water directly next to the stem of the lily until you feel it touch the bottom of the pond. Push it down another 2 inches into the soil and squeeze the lever on top of the rod to release the fertilizer tablet.

Raise the fertilizer rod out of the pond water and insert a new tablet into the bottom. Insert the second fertilizer tablet into the soil on the opposite side of the water lily just as you did the first one. Repeat the process to fertilize all remaining lilies.

Repeat the fertilizing procedure at least once per month from spring through the fall, however every two weeks is optimal to achieve the most blooms.
