How to Build My Own Bubbler Bucket

Hydroponics is a way of growing plants organically in a nutrient solution instead of soil. Because the grower controls the nutrient solution, he knows exactly what is going into the growing plants. Hydroponics eliminates having to deal with pests and diseases, which are sometimes introduced by soil, and is a good alternative when suitable land is limited or unavailable. It can be done indoors all year round with a home made bubbler bucket. Bubbler buckets are inexpensive and easy to make.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic bucket
  • Lid
  • Plastic cup

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the plastic bucket of any impurities that it may contain. The bucket should have a lid that fits and be large enough for the type and number of plants that you will be growing.

    • 2

Place the plastic cup upside down on the lid and trace around it with a marker. Poke a hole in the plastic lid and cut out the circle inside the drawn line so the cup will fit snuggly in the hole. If the lid is thick and hard, use a box cutter or power tools to cut the hole.

    • 3

Poke a hole in the side of the bucket just below the bottom of the lid. Run the tubing through the hole and attach the air stone to the end of the tube that is now in the bucket. Attach the other end of the tubing to the air pump. Lay the air stone, with the tubing attached, in the bottom of the bucket while leaving the air pump outside the bucket to be safely plugged in.

    • 4

Fill the bucket with a mixture of water and nutrient solution. Make sure the liquid level is high enough so that, when the lid is closed, the bottom of the cup will be submerged.

    • 5

Poke holes in the bottom and sides of the plastic cup to allow the roots of the plant to draw water through them. Insert the cup, buttom down, into the hole in the lid.

    • 6

Put your plant in the cup and fill up any empty space with a growing medium of your choice, such as rockwool or perlite. Place the lid on the bucket and gently slip the cup into the hole. The bubbler is now complete and can be moved or placed under growing lights.
