How to Start Yucca Seeds

Yucca is a genus of perennial shrub with 40 to 50 species. These drought-hardy plants enjoy hot, arid climates or grow well as houseplants. All of the yucca species grow easily from seed. The best place to start yucca plants from seed is indoors. Yucca seeds germinate best at around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the same temperatures we enjoy in our homes. When well cared for, yucca seeds germinate readily. But always plant about twice as many as you think you'll need to compensate for any loses.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bowl with hot water. Add your yucca seed to the bowl and allow it to soak for 24 hours.

    • 2

Fill a seed tray to within 1/4 inch of its rim with moistened cactus or succulent potting mix.

    • 3

Plant one seed per cell, twice as deep as its diameter.

    • 4

Place the cover on the seedling tray.

    • 5

Place the tray near a sunny windowsill (south facing, if possible) where it will receive indirect sunlight.

    • 6

Check the soil's moisture level daily. Make sure that it remains moist but not wet. If the soil is dry to the touch, moisten it to its depth with water from a spray bottle. The seedlings should emerge in one to three weeks. If they do not, allow the soil to dry out completely. Then re-moisten it with water from the spray bottle the seeds should germinate soon. After the seeds germinate, allow the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings.
