Flower Combinations to Plant in a Window Box

Selecting flowers to grow in combination in a window box is part art and part science. Select flowers that look good together and have the same growing requirements. Consider their form as well. The ideal container is made up of a thriller, spiller and filler. A thriller is a tall, upright plant. A spiller is a plant that trails over the edge. A filler is a plant that fills any empty spots.
  1. Moonlight Sparkle

    • Petunias are easy to grow, flower all summer long and combine with other easy-to-grow plants to create a perfect window box. Supertunia white looks good during the day, but really draws the eye at night when the moonlight reflects off the flowers. Pair it with Saturozygis pink sensation and Superbenia coral red to create a riot of color. Add a trailer, such as the sweet potato vine Margarita to add the finishing touch. The ideal window box for this recipe is one that is at least 18 inches long. Use one of each plant, except for the Superbenia. Place one Superbenia plant on each end of the window box. Place the Supertunia beside one Superbenia, then the sweet potato vine and finally the Saturozygis, which will sit in between the sweet potato vine and the last Superbenia. Place this window box in full sun.

    Cool Pastels

    • Decorate a 16-inch window box with pastel-colored flowers to create an arrangement that has a cool feeling to it, even though it is ideal for growing in full sun. At the back of the container, place Angelonia Angelface white at one corner. Next to it, in the center of the container, toward the back, plant one Supertunia lemon plume and next to that plant one verbena Babylon deep pink. In the front of the window box, place one plant of Supertunia mini rose veined and one plant of lobelia Laguna Sky Blue so they sit toward the front on either side of the Supertunia lemon plume. Using more than one plant, or plants in pots that are larger than 4.5 inches will require a larger window box.

    Red, White and Blue

    • Create a patriotic window box that is ideal for Fourth of July celebrations using this combination of red, white and blue flowers suggested by plant breeders Proven Winners. Select two plants each of Nemesia Sunsatia cranberry and verbena Babylon red. These are the anchor plants and will go on either end of the window box. Plant the Nemesia in the back corner and the verbena in front of it. The other three plants you need will be planted in a "V" shape. Start at the back of the container and plant one Marguerite daisy Molimba helo white next to one of the Nemesia. Next to the other Nemesia, still on the back row, plant a Supertunia white. In between these two plants, on the front row, plant one verbena Babylon blue. This combination requires a window box that is 24 inches long. Position this window box combination in full sun.

    Bright Color

    • Create a splash of vibrant color with this window box combination which is ideal for full sun or an area where the sun is filtered. Select a window box that is 16 inches long. On the back row, plant two coleus Colorblaze Sedona in either corner. In the center of these two plants, in the back row, plant one oxalis charmed wine. In the front row, plant Calibrachoa Superbells Dreamsickle on either end and in the center of these two plants, plant one Calibrachoa Superbells yellow chiffon.
