Plants With Purple Leaves & a Yellow Flower

Using diversely colored plants helps to attract attention to a garden or landscape. Typically, plants have foliage in shades of green, but many species of plants grow foliage in other hues, including purple. Selecting flowering plants with yellow blossoms adds an illusion of a warm, bright feeling to the garden or landscape. Several varieties of plants develop purple leaves and yellow blooms.
  1. Trout Lily

    • Trout lily (Erythronium americanum) is an herbaceous flowering plant that develops from corms. This native eastern Canadian plant is a true lily, as it belongs to the Liliaceae plant family. Trout lilies derive their name from the mottled appearance of foliage that resembles a brook trout. Its fleshy green leaves have numerous spots and splashes of purple. During early spring, trout lilies bloom with a singular yellow blossom comprised of three petals and three sepals. Trout lilies thrive in moist, fertile wooded areas and meadows.

    Chameleon Spurge

    • Chameleon spurge (Euphorbia dulcis "Chameleon") is an herbaceous perennial flowering plant. This Euphorbiaceae plant family member reaches heights of 1 to 1-1/2 feet with an similar spread. Beginning in May, small yellow flowers develop on the chameleon spurge with showy purple bracts and stems. The oblong leaves of the chameleon spurge are a dusky purple hue that changes to burgundy-purple with age. During the fall, the foliage takes on a red tint. Chameleon spurge enjoys full sun to partial shade and moderate, well-draining soil with dry to medium moisture.

    Albury Purple Tutan

    • Albury purple tutan (Hypericum Androsaemum "Albury Purple") is a deciduous shrub endemic to Eurasia. This perennial shrub has a rounded formation that grows 12 to 18 inches annually. Albury purple tutan reaches heights of 1-½ to 3 feet with an equivalent spread. Its foliage has a deep purple hue with an oval to oblong shape. This shrub flourishes with clusters of five-petaled yellow flowers June through August. Albury purple tutan likes sun to partial shade, but does not tolerate full shade well.

    Aeonium Schwartzkopf

    • Aeonium "Schwartzkopf" (Aeonium manriqueorum) is a perennial bushy succulent plant. A member of the Crassulaceae plant family, it grows to heights of 2 to 6 feet with a spread of 1 to 2 feet. Aeonium Schwartzkopf forms light yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. Its foliage has a chocolate to purplish tint. Aeonium Schwartzkopf is tolerant of drought and thrives in full sun and makes an ideal container plant.
