Watermelon That Only Grows to Baseball Size

They may not be exactly baseball-sized, but they are pretty small. The new trend in watermelons is known as "personal watermelons," and they range in size from 2 to 5 lbs. Perfect for small home gardens or small families, these little melons have thinner rinds and are just as tasty as their bigger cousins.
  1. "Little Baby Flower F1"

    • This little melon has all the look of the big melons with none of the bulk. A classic light and dark green striped rind protects bright red flesh that is crisp and sweet, with a high sugar content. Vines average approximately three to five 2- to 4-lb. fruits. Give Little Baby about 70 days to maturity.

    "Petite Treat"

    • Give Petite Treat about 85 days to maturity. These melons have traditional green-banded skin and strawberry flesh. The firm, crispy flesh has a sweet flavor and wonderful aroma. These pint-sized watermelons look and taste great. At only 3 to 6 lbs. per fruit, they should fit in any backyard garden.

    "Golden Midget"

    • A watermelon of a different color, Golden Midget has a striking yellow rind protecting salmon-pink flesh. These melons are pleasantly sweet and mature at only about 3 lbs. You'll know they're ready to pick when they turn yellow, which takes approximately 70 days.

    "Hime Kansen"

    • Hailing from Japan, this "icebox" watermelon matures at about 5 lbs. It is slightly oblong and has a black-striped dark green rind. Its deep red flesh has a high sugar content for a sweet taste. Hime Kansen reaches maturity in about 60 days.
