How to Trim an Arbor Style Tree

An arbor-style tree, also called an espalier tree, is a tree that's been trained along a trellis or arbor to grow flush with a wall or fence. The first arbor-style trees were seen in Egyptian tombs about 1,400 before the common era. In the 15th century, espalier trees became popular throughout Europe and made their way to America. Arbor-style trees grow well in gardens with limited space. Pruning is necessary on espalier trees regularly to keep their growth in check.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie any branches meant to be part of the espalier design to the arbor or trellis with the twine. Tie the twine loosely enough that the branch has room to grow.

    • 2

Remove any branches that you don't need for the espalier design at the base of the tree. Cut the branches off with the pruning shears.

    • 3

Cut back any shoots that are longer than 12 inches. Cut the shoots back to a bud with the pruning shears.

    • 4

Pinch off any small shoots as they appear during the growing season.
