How to Plant Duckweed

Duckweed is a small, aquatic plant that usually reproduces by asexual budding. Duckweed is also the smallest of all flowering plants. You must have a pond or a water garden to grow this plant. Duckweed contains a large amount of protein, and contributes to the diet of certain birds and even humans in some parts of the world. However, duckweed can become an invasive nuisance, choking out other plant life and depleting pond oxygen. If you want to grow duckweed, remember that you might end up with more than your pond can handle.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a bag of duckweed at a pet store or garden supply store that carries aquatic plants.

    • 2

Add fish to your pond before you add duckweed to it. If you want other aquatic plants, such as pond lilies, also add those before you introduce duckweed.

    • 3

Fill a bucket with your pond water. Empty your purchased duckweed into the bucket, to prepare the duckweed for its new environment. Leave the duckweed in the bucket for up to one week to allow it to adjust and begin to multiply.

    • 4

Scoop the duckweed from the bucket with a fishnet, and transfer it to your pond.

    • 5

Grow more duckweed in your bucket if you want to ensure that you will have more, in case your fish eat the entire first batch.
