How to Sterilize Pond Plants

Since pond plants grow in an environment that's shared with other plants and aquatic critters, they can easily spread disease to other flora and fauna in and around the pond. Before you transplant new plants into your pond, it is a good idea to sterilize them, especially if you do not know their previous growing conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix up a solution of regular household bleach with water. Use 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. Use a glass or plastic container that will not react with the bleach.

    • 2

Fill another two containers with fresh room temperature water.

    • 3

Dip the plant into the solution and hold it under the water for two minutes. Use a pair of gloves to keep the bleach off your skin.

    • 4

Move the plant from the mixture into one of the fresh water containers. Add the recommended amount of dechlorinator liquid to the water and wait another two minutes.

    • 5

Rinse the plant in the other fresh water container to remove any remaining chemicals.
