How to Use Oxygen Rocks in an Aerogarden

The oxygen rocks, or airstones, in the AeroGarden hydroponic grow system provide plant roots with a direct dose of oxygen. Saturated in water, the airstones create air bubbles in the garden bowl. These air bubbles pass directly into an air supply tube, which filters the oxygen from the stone directly up to the plant. To provide your plants with oxygen, you must properly install the stone. In addition, the stone requires periodic cleaning to keep it from clogging with debris and becoming inefficient.

Instructions

  1. Install Oxygen Rock/Airstone

    • 1

      Unplug the AeroGarden.

    • 2

Remove the AeroGarden grow surface from on top of the AeroGarden bowl.

    • 3

Place the grow surface on top of a tall bowl or glass jar to protect the hanging plant roots if plants are growing in the bowl.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the oxygen rock, or the airstone, into the opening on the clear air supply tube in the U-bracket inside the AeroGarden bowl.

    • 5

Press the "Reset" button inside the AeroGarden bowl to reset the nutrient light.

    • 6

Pour 3 1/2 qt. of room temperature water into the AeroGarden bowl, if necessary. If you add water, make sure to add two of the included nutrient tablets into the water.

    • 7

Set the grow surface back down on top of the AeroGarden bowl.

    • 8

Plug the AeroGarden back into the power supply.

    Clean the Oxygen Rock/Airstone

    • 9

Unplug the AeroGarden. Remove the grow surface and place it on top of a tall bowl or glass jar to protect the hanging plant roots.

    • 10

Remove the airstone from the clear air supply tube in the U-bracket inside the bowl.

    • 11

Scrub the stone with a toothbrush under running water.

    • 12

Soak the airstone in a bowl of distilled vinegar for 24 hours.

    • 13

Remove the stone from the vinegar and rinse it under the tap thoroughly to remove the vinegar. Allow it to air thoroughly for at least 24 hours.

    • 14

Soak the stone in a solution of one part bleach and three parts water. Make sure you completely rinse the vinegar from the stone before starting this step, as vinegar and bleach can cause toxic fumes. If the stone is not completely dry, the bleach will not fully absorb into the stone.

    • 15

Rinse the stone thoroughly under running water to get rid of any bleach residue.

    • 16

Blow air through the stone with a turkey baster to flush out any chlorine and loosen any debris. Allow the oxygen rock to dry for 24 hours, then reinstall it in the AeroGarden bowl.
