How to Dry & Preserve Wildflowers & Grasses for Habitat Scenes

Drying and preserving wildflowers and grasses is a hobby that is fun and easy to do. But the traditional method of pressing and drying wildflowers and grasses won't work if you want to preserve the articles you collect for a habitat scene. Instead, the wildflowers and grasses must retain their shape so they can be used in the habitat. Drying them using a hanging method is preferred.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your wooden-pegged coffee cup hangers or insert your cup hooks into the wall, so you have a place to hang your wildflowers and grasses.

    • 2

Use sharp scissors to cut the bottom off the stems of your wildflowers and grasses, so the stems are even and will look nice in your habitat.

    • 3

Bundle eight to 10 stems or eight to 10 grasses at the bottom with a rubber band.

    • 4

Insert an unraveled paper clip or florist wire into the rubber band.

    • 5

Bend the clip or wire around the rubber band so it won't slip out when you hang your bundle.

    • 6

Shape the other end of the clip or wire into a hook.

    • 7

Hang the bundle of wildflowers or grasses on your coffee cup holder or cup hook to dry.

    • 8

Allow the wildflowers or grasses to dry completely, up to three weeks.

    • 9

Arrange your wildflowers or grasses in your habitat as you like.
