How to Grow Aeroponic Okra

Aeroponic gardens, like the AeroGarden, feature specialized hydroponics and give homeowners a quick, compact way to grow vegetables and herbs indoors. These systems hang plant roots in air chambers and circulate water through the area for complete drainage and support. Okra grows up to 6 feet tall at maturity, and outgrows aeroponic gardens in a short time. This sensitive plant requires frost-free growing, though, and may require early indoor starts for a longer growing season. Use an aeroponic garden for this early start and transplant seedlings to the garden when the weather warms.

Instructions

    • 1

Start okra seeds six to eight weeks before the last frost date in your area if you mean to put the okra outdoors. Okra requires a long growing season, and does well with this extension to the outdoor season. The plant fails at temperatures under 65 degrees F.

    • 2

Place okra seeds in the growing deck of your aeroponic garden. Put one seed in each pod or division in the system to give the seeds room to germinate and grow.

    • 3

Mix hydroponic nutrients with water for the water source, according to manufacturer directions. Hydroponic nutrients provide vitamins and minerals for germination, root growth and sprouting. Never give the okra water without nutrients, as the plants cannot survive on water and air alone.

    • 4

Put the system in a spot with at least six hours of natural or artificial light every day, and temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees F. Okra requires warmth and sun for germination and growth. Program the system to give the okra 2 inches of water every week.

    • 5

Transplant the okra to appropriate growing situations after last frost or when it outgrows the aeroponic garden.
