Can I Grow Bamboo on a Balcony?

Bamboo differs from other members of the grass family with its woody stems, possible hefty size and branching growth habit. Many people think bamboo only grows in tropical parts of the world, but several species of bamboo are suited for temperate regions. Bamboo even grows well in containers indoors, or on outside living spaces like patios, decks or balconies.
  1. Types of Bamboo

    • The bamboo plant group includes 45 genera with around 1,200 species that range in height from 12 inches for dwarf varieties to 60 feet for giant varieties. With this many bamboos to choose from, a suitable bamboo plant is available for nearly any balcony. Bamboo comes in two growth types; running and clumping. Select bamboo based on the growth type, expected size needed, coloring and growing environment provided on your balcony, such as amount of light available. Choose varieties suited for your specific region for best results.

    Containers and Soil

    • Grow bamboo in wide containers that provide room for growth. Running bamboos multiply faster and outgrow their pots quicker. Use 10-gallon containers for small bamboo varieties and at least 25-gallon pots for larger bamboo. Containers must have drainage holes in all regions and should include insulation that protects the root ball from extreme temperatures, be it summer heat or winter chills. Use top-quality potting soil when growing bamboo in containers on your balcony to ensure a well-draining growing media.

    Bamboo Placement

    • Put the container on your balcony in a place that receives at least five hours of full sunlight, unless the species you have will grow in partially shaded locations. Find a spot with wind protection for larger bamboo varieties to prevent them from falling over. This is also important in areas with cold winters where the wind chills can damage the bamboo. Place the bamboo along the edge of the balcony to create a beautiful and natural living screen.

    Caring for Container Bamboo

    • Bamboo will grow for many years on your balcony with the proper care. Water the bamboo as needed to maintain moist, but not soggy, soil from spring through fall while the bamboo is actively growing. Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering during the winter. Apply a fertilizer high in nitrogen, such as 30-10-10, when new bamboo sprouts emerge in the spring and throughout the season as directed. Repot every three to four years when the bamboo outgrows the present pot.
