How to Build a Hanging Succulent Garden

Succulents are the perfect choice for people who often forget to care for their plants. They conserve water and require very little care once planted. These plants are excellent choices for growing indoors year-round and outdoors during the summer where they can soak up the sun. Grouping several types of succulent plants together in containers, such as dish gardens, is one popular way to display succulents. Suspending these or other containers in the air creates a hanging succulent garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of landscape fabric to fit inside the moss basket. This is important to hold the growing medium in place.

    • 2

Fill the basket with a cacti soil mix.

    • 3

Place the succulent plants in the container in various patterns to determine the best layout. Don't remove the plants from their containers until you decide the garden design.

    • 4

Dig holes only deep enough to bury the succulent plants at the same depth they grew in the containers.

    • 5

Plant the succulents close together and firm the soil to hold them upright, but don't water them for at least two or more days.

    • 6

Hang the succulent garden from a tree branch in the backyard or some other location, such as a back porch, deck or patio area. Ensure that whatever you choose to hang your garden from can support the weight of a filled and dampened garden.

    • 7

Water the hanging garden thoroughly and then wait until the soil nearly dries to water again.

    • 8

Move the succulent plants indoors for the winter in regions where the plants won't survive outside.
