How to Build Staghorn Fern Planters

Staghorn ferns (Platycerium bifurcatum) are epiphytes that grow in air rather than soil. The ferns root in tree branches and hang down for air, moisture and nutrition. Growing these bright ferns at home means building appropriate planting situations and maintaining nutrition, moisture and air supply. Start your own staghorn fern on a plank of wood or piece of driftwood for best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a large piece of decorative driftwood for an authentic planting. Screw two picture-frame hangers into the driftwood’s back for hanging on the wall, or find a safe spot for the driftwood on a countertop or a windowsill.

    • 2

Soak some peat moss in water until it's moist throughout, and then divide it into two sections. Lay one section of peat moss on the driftwood at its halfway point.

    • 3

Lay the staghorn fern's root ball over the peat moss with the fern facing up. The fern roots in the wood and grows laterally along the driftwood’s length. Place the other peat moss portion over the root system covering the roots. Wrap twine or stocking around the driftwood, tying both peat moss pieces and the fern's root system to the wood.

Put the driftwood in a site with indirect or filtered sunlight and good air movement. Dunking the wood and fern in water once or twice a week keeps the fern healthy. Feed it with water-soluble 10-10-10 fertilizer every month. Use a spray bottle to apply the fertilizer to the fern's root system.
