Yellow Flowering Shrubs With Hanging Branches

Shrubs with yellow blossoms light up the sea of green foliage in your landscape. Shrubs with pendulous, hanging branches add another layer of texture and visual interest. Weeping, yellow-blooming shrubs can be used as specimen plants, in borders, as foundation shrubs and to create privacy barriers and screens. Choose pendulous shrubs that thrive in your planting site's specific soil, moisture and exposure conditions, as well as your U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone.
  1. Small

    • Small, yellow-flowering shrubs can be used to define border edges or as foundation shrubs. The pygmy peashrub grows to just under 3 feet tall and blooms with yellow blossoms in spring. Hardy in USDA zones 3b to 7a, this weeping deciduous shrub grows in sun to partial shade and moist to dry soil, making it a versatile choice for borders or containers. For showy flowers and fragrance, plant a "Mystic Meidiland" rose (Rosa "Meialate Mystic Meidiland"). This 3-foot-tall shrub has a weeping, spreading form and blooms through summer with yellow, white, pink and orange flowers. It's hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9a and grows best in moist, well-draining soil.

    Medium

    • Shrubs 6 feet tall or less help frame areas within the landscape. The "Walker" Siberian peashrub (Caragana arborescens "Walker") reaches heights of 6 feet and has pendulous branches covered with airy, deciduous foliage. It blooms with tubular yellow blossoms in spring and is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8, where it prefers full sun and tolerates poor soil. The barberry (Berberis x hybrido-gagnepainii) also grows to 6 feet tall and has a weeping form. It blooms through summer with small, yellow flowers and grows well in sun to partial shade. Barberries are hardy in USDA zones 5b to 9a.

    Large

    • For a specimen plant that draws the eye, plant Henry Lauder's walking stick (Corylus avellana "Contorta"). This weeping, deciduous shrub reaches heights to 10 feet and has twisted, contorted and drooping branches. Hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9, this sun-loving shrub blooms with pendulous yellow catkins in winter. The Kilmarnock willow (Salix caprea "Kilmarnock") grows to 8 feet tall and has a weeping form. Early in spring, this deciduous shrub displays yellow buds that age to gray. It's hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8 and thrives in sunny sites with consistent irrigation.

    Tall

    • Tall shrubs form screens, adding privacy to your outdoor living space. The "Andean Gold" saw-toothed azara (Azara serrata "Andean Gold") reaches heights of 15 feet. This drooping evergreen's branches are covered with lustrous foliage, offset by clusters of bright golden flowers in summer. Hardy in USDA zones 7 to 10, this fast-growing shrub prefers full to partial sun and regular irrigation. The ovens wattle (Acacia pravissima) grows to 20 feet tall and has drooping branches. It blooms in late winter with clusters of fragrant yellow flowers and has blue-green foliage. This evergreen tolerates salt and drought and is hardy in USDA zones 8 to 11, where it thrives in partial to full sun exposures.
