When Does Winged Euonymus Bloom in Colorado?

During the spring and summer in Colorado, winged euonymus (Euonymus alatus) is an ordinary shrub with medium to deep green foliage and inconspicuous flowers. Then, in the fall, it creates a blaze of color in the garden with brilliant red foliage and purplish or reddish capsules that split to reveal orange seeds. After the leaves fall, the corky growths along the stems add interest to the winter landscape. The species is an excellent shrub for large gardens, while more compact varieties work well in smaller gardens.
  1. Description

    • Winged euonymus is a large shrub that can grow up to 15 feet tall and wide, but typically grows 6 to 8 feet tall and wide in Colorado. Prominent corky ridges grow on two or four sides of the stems, giving the plant its common name. Small, flat-topped clusters of individual flowers that are 1/3 inch in diameter bloom on the current year’s growth in the spring. The leaves usually hide the yellowish-green flowers. The plant gets another common name, burning bush, from its bright red leaves in the fall.

    Culture

    • Winged euonymus grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 8. It grows in most areas of Colorado, although it may suffer dieback of limbs and twigs in the winter in colder zones. It tolerates most types of soil, but it grows best in moist, well-drained soil. The foliage is more vibrant in full sun, while the leaves are pinkish-red and faded yellow in the shade. It is tolerant of drought and urban conditions. Since it adapts well to pruning, winged euonymus is good for foundation plantings, hedges, barriers and screens.

    Compact Winged Euonymus

    • Compact winged euonymus (Euonymus alatus “Compactus”) is the most popular variety used in landscapes. It has a dense rounded shape and grows 8 feet wide and tall but is often kept smaller with pruning. The medium to dark green leaves turn red, and the fruit capsules ripen to reddish-purple in the fall. It usually has only a few wings during its first year. It is not as cold-tolerant as the species and is reliably hardy to only zone 5 and grows best at elevations below 6,000 feet in Colorado. It is also labeled as “Compacta."

    Fire Ball Winged Euonymus

    • Fire ball winged euonymus (Euonymus alatus "Fire Ball") is a newer variety with leaves that turn cherry red and fruit that ripens to reddish-pink in the fall. It grows 6 feet wide and tall in a compact rounded shape and is a multistemmed shrub that fills out to the ground. Its warty brown bark and harvest gold stems make a striking display in the winter garden. It is hardy to zone 4a and grows in most areas of Colorado.
