How to Grow Apache Plume

The apache plume shrub (Fallugia paradoxa) is a common sight in the Chihuahuan desert, thus making it ideal for the xeriscape garden. It grows to 6 feet tall with a 4-foot spread and bears white flowers in the spring. The pink plumes are the shrub's fruit, which appear in the summer after flowering. Apache plume is hardy to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit and is tolerant of drought. Although apache plume's seeds germinate readily, nurseries within its hardiness zones carry juvenile plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant apache plume a full-sun location in the warmest area of the garden. The soil must drain well.

    • 2

Remove the apache plume from its nursery pot. Plant it in a hole that is twice the diameter of the pot and the same depth. Fill the hole with soil, pressing around the base of the shrub with your feet to remove air pockets.

    • 3

Water the apache plume to keep the soil evenly moist at all times. After three months, begin gradually decreasing the frequency of irrigations until the shrub is watered deeply only once a month during the hottest times of the year. When the weather cools, the plant requires no water.

    • 4

Prune the apache plume only if it is being grown as a shrub. Other than shearing it to the desired shape, it requires no pruning.
