How to Fertilize Daphne

Daphne is a versatile group of small shrubs known for their fragrant flowers, and most grow best in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 7 to 9. Since there are many different kinds of Daphnes, follow the planting, fertilizing and care instructions for your particular variety. In general, though, Daphnes have little fertilizer needs and a once year fertilizer application is usually all that is necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a fertilizer specially formulated for roses or an all-purpose fertilizer and fertilize Daphnes once a year in the late winter or early spring, before the shrubs begin to put forth new growth.

    • 2

Sprinkle the fertilizer evenly around the Daphne plant, under the entire canopy of the shrub. Use the rate for each plant as recommended on the fertilizer’s label. Do not get fertilizer on the leaves or stems of the plants.

    • 3

Water the soil after fertilizing to help the fertilizer settle into the soil and dissolve. About 1/2 to 1 inch of water should suffice.
