How to Care for a Rabbit's Foot Plant on a Volcanic Rock

Rabbit's foot fern, also known as Davallia fejeensis, is so named for its furry rhizomes that hang over the edge of plant. These furry clumps resemble a rabbit's foot, which is where the fern gets its common name. This fern works well as a houseplant because it thrives in indirect sunlight and at room temperature. It also has a shallow root system, which makes it ideal for potting with lava rock. This porous rock drains well, is rich in nutrients and maintains a humid environment for ferns.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the lava rocks in water, and allow the rocks to absorb all of the water. It will retain the moisture for longer than average potting soil.

    • 2

Place the fern in a location that receives indirect sunlight. An east-facing window is best as afternoon sun is too strong for the plant.

    • 3

Keep the plant at a consistent temperature of about 60 to 75 degrees F. This is the average room temperature.

    • 4

Mist the fern with water two to three times a week. The leaves should be moist and supple.

    • 5

Allow the lava rocks to dry out completely before soaking again. The rabbit's foot needs to dry out between watering or it may develop root rot. Once the rocks are dry, douse with water and allow the rocks to become soaked again.
